Welcome!

Dear PR,

last week we marked a special milestone—45 years since the founding of the German Trade Office in 1981. We celebrated this anniversary on May 29, reflecting on decades of strengthening German-Taiwanese economic ties.

Fittingly, we welcomed the Berlin-Taipei Parliamentary Circle of Friends during their delegation visit. At our office, we provided an economic briefing on Taiwan and hosted a closed-door exchange with German companies operating locally—an excellent opportunity for open dialogue and insight. You can read more about the visit below.

I am also delighted to share that Linda Blechert, General Manager of DEinternational, was awarded the German-Taiwanese Friendship Medal by the German Institute Taipei. This recognition honors her outstanding dedication to bilateral relations over the past decade—well deserved.

As a busy trade fair season in Germany comes to a close, we look back at Learntec 2026, where we supported Taiwanese edtech company AR2VR in showcasing their innovative solutions. Looking ahead, two major trade fairs are coming up in Germany this June: ILA Berlin 2026 and The Smarter E Europe 2026. We’re pleased to offer discounted tickets for ILA and free entry to The Smarter E—feel free to reach out for details.

Later this month I will be travelling to Germany for a series of public networking events, with lots of opportunities to connect for a private consultation. You can find my full travel itinerary and details about how to get in touch below.

Computex kicks off this week, once again drawing global attention to Taiwan’s tech and AI ecosystem. Alongside industry leaders such as Nvidia’s Jensen Huang, several of our Business Alliance members—including Covestro—will be presenting their latest innovations.

In recent news, Taiwan’s economy continues to gain momentum: the U.S. has granted preferential tariffs under a bilateral agreement, while industrial output is surging on strong AI and semiconductor demand. At the same time, businesses are accelerating investment and diversification—from hydrogen production to AI cooling—further solidifying Taiwan’s position as a global hub for advanced manufacturing.

Thank you to all our partners and friends—long-standing and new. We look forward to many more years of fostering strong connections between Germany and Taiwan.

Have a good week!

Dr. Eva Langerbeck
Chief Representative & Executive Director

U.S. Formalizes Tariff Concessions for Taiwan Under Investment MOU

The United States has introduced preferential Section 232 tariffs for Taiwanese exports under a bilateral investment MOU, cutting duties on automobile parts and wood products to 15% and eliminating some aircraft component tariffs. The changes, retroactive to May 1, bring Taiwan in line with other U.S. partners, though semiconductors remain under review.

The move reflects U.S. commitment to the agreement and signals expectations for Taiwan’s cooperation in future trade measures. The MOU also promotes deeper investment ties, with Taiwan pledging up to $250 billion in U.S. investments and companies already preparing initial plans with government-backed support.

Industrial Production Increases 14.16%

Taiwan’s industrial production index rose 14.16% year-on-year last month, driven by strong demand for AI infrastructure, especially servers and advanced semiconductors. Manufacturing output grew 15.13%, extending a 26‑month expansion but missing forecasts due to shipment adjustments and a high comparison base. Computer-related devices surged 85.4%, with solid gains also in electronic components.

Traditional industries showed mixed results: machinery and base metals rose modestly, while chemicals and auto parts declined due to weak demand and inventory adjustments. Industrial production grew over 21% in the first four months, with officials optimistic about continued momentum from AI- and computing-related demand.

Taiwan's Grand Pacific Petrochemical Eyes Chip Market With Hydrogen Expansion

Grand Pacific Petrochemical plans to raise NT$5 billion (US$155 million) to build a high-purity hydrogen production line in Kaohsiung, targeting semiconductor manufacturing demand and carbon reduction goals. Hydrogen is essential in chipmaking processes such as EUV lithography, and the facility—set to begin operations in 2028—will include solar power support. The company is also shifting from traditional petrochemical refining toward hydrogen extraction and partnering with major gas suppliers to enhance purity.

The move comes amid growing global competition and oversupply from China, prompting the firm to diversify markets and reduce reliance on Chinese exports. Southeast Asia now accounts for over half of its overseas sales. The company is also expanding into advanced materials, including high-performance nylon and heat-resistant composites for EV batteries, to capture emerging industry demand.

Taiwan's Niching Expands AI Cooling Push with NT$508 Million Investment

Niching Industrial plans to expand into AI cooling by investing NT$508 million (US$16.2 million) to raise its stake in Ming Chun Yuan Micro Precise Technology to 82%, with the deal set to close on July 1. The move will make Ming Chun Yuan a subsidiary and strengthen Niching’s position in thermal management, especially in vapor chamber cooling for high-performance chips.

The acquisition aims to boost profitability and support growth as demand rises for cooling solutions in AI, high-performance computing, and advanced packaging. Niching has already seen strong revenue growth and is shifting toward higher-value products, reflecting increasing need for efficient heat management in advanced semiconductor technologies.
