Dear Subscriber,
We hosted a delegation from the German Chamber of Commerce in East Westphalia (IHK Ostwestfalen zu Bielefeld) on their trip to Taiwan. Over an action-packed week, they explored Taiwan–Germany economic ties, experienced the local business and cultural landscape through institutional visits and a stop at COMPUTEX, and connected with our community at German Riesling Night on June 4. Scroll down for highlights and photos from their visit.
This month also marked the start of my tour in Germany, beginning with an inspiring few days at ILA Berlin, where I had the chance to explore the latest aerospace innovations—more on that soon. I also attended the 30th anniversary of the ITRI Europe Office in Berlin, where leading research partners gathered to renew the ITRIs collaboration with Fraunhofer to expand into AI and robotics, highlighting strengthened Taiwan–Europe innovation ties. My journey continues this week at Silicon Saxony Days in Dresden, alongside a series of engagements with local chambers of commerce and opportunities for one-on-one consultations. You’ll find my full itinerary and ways to connect below.
Don’t miss the chance to join leading trade fairs in Germany with free tickets—we still have a few spots available for Taiwanese companies at The Smarter E Europe 2026 from June 23 to 25.
In other news, the European Economic and Trade Office (EETO is inviting European companies operating in Taiwan to participate in the 2026 European Business Confidence Survey. We’re also pleased to welcome our newest team member, Chloe, who will be supporting our Government Affairs and Delegations work in the coming months—do say hello if you see her at one of our events!
From our Business Alliance, Covestro is inviting families to spark curiosity through its Grandparent–Grandchild Science Summer Camp, now open for registration, while igus has launched a new BPA-free high-performance plastic designed to meet evolving EU food safety standards.
In the latest news from Taiwan’s economy and business, the government and TSMC are advancing a new semiconductor supply chain hub in Pingtung, while Taiwanese companies continue to expand globally with investments in Europe and renewable energy projects in Vietnam. At the same time, exports have surged to near-record levels on strong AI-driven demand, reinforcing Taiwan’s central role in the global tech supply chain.

2026 Covestro Grandparent-Grandchild Science Camp — Registration Now Open
|
|
|
Covestro Taiwan has opened registration for its 2026 Grandparent-Grandchild Science Camp, themed “Grandpa’s Secret Garden.” The program invites grandparents and elementary school–aged children to explore science together through playful, hands-on activities. Held across three locations in Taiwan, the camp emphasizes shared discovery and the idea that simple, everyday phenomena can spark curiosity when explored together.
The camp is part of a rotating three-year concept that introduces a completely new curriculum each cycle. In 2026, participants will dive into three interactive experiments—from using butterfly pea flowers to observe color changes in response to acidity, to creating “snow-like” materials from superabsorbent polymers, and even building a functional electrical circuit game. Each activity combines learning with creativity, while also giving participants something tangible to take home.
At its core, the initiative is about more than science—it is about connection. Organizers and public partners highlight the growing importance of creating spaces where generations can meaningfully interact, learn from each other, and build lasting memories in an increasingly fast-paced society.
- Hands-on experiments blending chemistry, materials science, and electronics
- Designed specifically for grandparent–grandchild pairs
- Hosted in Taipei, Changhua, and Pingtung in August 2026
- Aims to foster curiosity, creativity, and intergenerational bonding
- Registration open until June 30, 2026

EU Ban on Bisphenol A: igus Develops New Material for Food Processing Machinery
|
|
|
EU Regulation 2024/3190 is forcing food machinery manufacturers to eliminate bisphenol A (BPA) from components that come into contact with food, with new machines required to comply by July 2026 and existing lines by January 2028. In response, igus is introducing iglidur A351, a BPA- and BPS-free high-performance plastic that enables designers to switch materials without redesigning or compromising performance.
iglidur A351 can be used across a wide range of food-industry applications, including bearings, gears, and direct-contact components in packaging and conveyor systems. It is available in multiple formats—granules for injection molding, semi-finished parts for machining, and filament for 3D printing—making it adaptable to existing production processes while meeting FDA compliance and regulatory requirements.
The material combines durability and efficiency, offering high strength, low weight, moisture resistance, and tolerance to extreme temperatures. Its built-in solid lubricants enable maintenance-free, hygienic dry operation, reducing costs and downtime. Additional features such as its blue color for optical detectability and extensive in-house testing further enhance safety and reliability in demanding food production environments.

Taiwan's Exports Hit 2nd Highest Level in May on AI Boom
Taiwan’s exports surged 51.7% year‑on‑year to US$78.48 billion in May, the second highest on record, driven by strong global demand for AI-related technology, according to the Ministry of Finance. Imports also hit a record US$60.57 billion, rising 54.9%, resulting in a trade surplus of US$17.91 billion. From January to May, exports grew 48.7% to US$341.83 billion, with the trade surplus nearly doubling.
Growth was led by AI-driven demand for semiconductors, servers, and related products, with ICT and electronic components making up 78.6% of total exports. While traditional industries saw modest gains, some sectors like transport and textiles declined. The U.S. remained Taiwan’s top export market, and strong AI demand is expected to keep exports elevated in June.

Pingtung Breaks Ground on Taiwan's 1st Semiconductor Supply Chain Park
Construction of Taiwan’s first semiconductor supply chain park began on June 12 in Pingtung, marking a milestone in developing a southern chip industry cluster. Planned by TSMC, the 28‑hectare site will host the company and key suppliers, and forms part of a broader semiconductor corridor spanning Chiayi, Tainan, Kaohsiung, and Pingtung.
President Lai said the project supports balanced regional development and a stronger industrial ecosystem with stable resources. TSMC reaffirmed its commitment to Taiwan despite global expansion, while Chairman C.C. Wei stressed that, beyond land and utilities, improving population size and education will be vital to prevent talent shortages.

Taiwan Chip Supplier Plans Czech Factory Near German Border
Taiwan Komico Technology plans to invest NT$1.39 billion (US$44 million) in a new factory in the Czech Republic, near TSMC’s Dresden site, to support semiconductor manufacturing. The facility, located in the Triangle Industrial Zone in Zatec, will focus on cleaning and surface treatment for chip components, with construction expected to run through next year and create up to 100 jobs.
The project marks parent company Mico Group’s first expansion into Europe and reflects growing supplier investment around TSMC’s European operations. The region is also attracting other semiconductor-related projects, including a chemical logistics hub, as Czech authorities aim to build a broader chip supply chain ecosystem with support from Taiwanese firms.
