Last weekend Taiwan was struck by Typhoon Bavi, injuring more than 100 people across Taiwan and forcing more than 15,000 residents to evacuate their homes. Our thoughts are with everyone affected, and we hope for a swift recovery in the impacted communities.

Although climate change is expected to reduce the frequency of typhoons in Taiwan, it is likely to significantly increase the frequency of intense and severe storms. The GTAI Deep Dive featured in this edition takes a closer look at Taiwan's water management and how Taiwan wants to mitigate the impact of environmental and climate risks.

Taiwan’s semiconductor industry requires a large amount of water. As demand for semiconductors continues to rise, water shortages could threaten the global chip supply chain. 

In May 2026, Taiwan introduced a water strategy for the period from 2026 to 2031 that aims to increase water security while reducing environmental and climate-related risks.  

Currently, Taiwan operates seven reclaimed water treatment plants and plans to build nine more. The "Pearl Chain Project" is an infrastructure initiative that aims to establish a nationwide water distribution network along the west coast. This network will enable water transfers to reduce regional imbalances in water availability. Taiwan is also seeking to diversify its water supply by constructing large-scale desalination plants, particularly near major science parks.

This presents new business opportunities for Germany, as Taiwan is investing heavily in water infrastructure, recycling, and efficiency. German suppliers are well positioned to compete with their integrated solutions, industrial equipment, and specialized components.

Inspired by potter wasps, the Italian company WASP designed the Crane WASP modular 3D printer, which builds house walls from clay on construction sites, aiming to create affordable and environmentally friendly housing in remote regions. As the printing process exposes dust and dirt to the lubricating film in the metal bearings of the printer, igus stepped in and provided lubricant-free sliding films.

According to WASP, igus sliding films improve print head precision and print quality thanks to their low weight. They are resistant to moisture and temperature fluctuations, require no lubrication, and therefore reduce maintenance and operating costs while ensuring reliable performance.

AI Demand Boosts Taiwan Semiconductor Equipment Suppliers

Strong AI chip demand continued to support Taiwan’s semiconductor equipment industry in the second quarter, particularly for testing, cooling, and thermal management equipment. Hon. Precision, a supplier of semiconductor testing automation equipment and thermal control systems, reported record monthly, quarterly, and first-half revenue growth. Other equipment suppliers like Horng Terng and All Ring Tech recorded stronger performance as well. 

Analysts expect AI-related investment to continue supporting Taiwan’s semiconductor equipment industry in the second half of the year, with AI testing and thermal management suppliers such as Hon and Horng Terng remaining key beneficiaries.

TSMC Builds Three New Packaging Facilities in Chiayi

TSMC plans to build three additional advanced packaging facilities in Phase II of the Chiayi Science Park. According to NSTC Minister Wu Cheng-wen, the project will strengthen the region’s economic resilience and establish Chiayi County as a global hub for advanced semiconductor packaging.

The park is also expected to attract biotechnology, aerospace, and precision machinery companies, while linking with science parks across Taiwan to create a leading AI and semiconductor industry corridor.

Taiwan's Exports in June reach third-highest monthly level on record

Taiwan’s exports increased 40.3% year-on-year to US$74.83 billion in June, reaching the third-highest monthly level on record, supported by continued strong demand for AI-related products according to the Ministry of Finance (MOF), which marked the 32nd consecutive month of year-on-year export growth.

MOF Department of Statistics Director Beatrice Tsai noted that Taiwan’s exports grew 47.1% in the first half of the year, ranking among the fastest growth rates worldwide, while its 32-month export growth streak is the longest among major economies.

Government Encourages Businesses to Use AI to Boost Productivity

The Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) has raised its target for AI adoption to more than 20,000 companies by 2028, up from a previous goal of 14,000. Since launching its AI promotion program last October, the ministry has helped 9,249 businesses, with service-sector firms accounting for the majority of participants.

The ministry’s program supports companies at diagnostic consulting, AI hardware and software deployment as well as training and research-and-development. AI adoption among Taiwan’s manufacturers and retailers has reached 38.5% so far. MOEA aims to raise that figure above 50% by 2028.
