Welcome!

Dear Subscriber,

With Automation Taipei 2026 opening its doors this week, the exhibition provides an ideal platform to discover the latest innovations and trends in Industry 4.0 and smart manufacturing. In this spirit, we are delighted to welcome 20 renowned German companies to the German Pavilion, where they will showcase their latest automation technologies, innovative products, and cutting-edge solutions. It is an exhibition you don't want to miss!

We also look forward to welcoming you to our Automation Taipei 2026 Networking Event and Panel Discussion, where experts from Siemens, Phoenix Contact, and Micro-Epsilon will discuss AI-driven manufacturing, smart automation and sustainability. Looking ahead, further opportunities for exchange await at Germany Day in Hsinchu, our exclusive Invest in Saxony Consultation Event in Taipei, the NRW Investment Forum in Taipei and Taiwan Business Night at InnoTrans 2026 in Berlin.

As Taiwan's economy continues to outperform expectations, opportunities are emerging across a growing range of industries. This week's GTAI Deep Dive explores Taiwan's chemical sector, highlighting chances and challenges for German suppliers in Taiwan.

Preparing for future opportunities also means being prepared for worst-case scenarios. As part of our commitment to workplace safety and continuous learning, the GTO team recently completed its annual first-aid training, combining practical exercises with realistic emergency scenarios.

Wishing you a great week ahead!

Taiwan’s Chemical Industry — GTAI Deep Dive

Taiwan’s chemical industry is expected to grow in the coming years, though at a slower rate than the overall economy. While the traditional petrochemical industry faces significant structural and import challenges, specialty and technology-intensive chemical segments offer strong growth potential, particularly those linked to the AI and semiconductor industries.

Overall, the outlook for German suppliers remains positive.

For German companies in the industry, the market remains fundamentally attractive, especially in technology-intensive niches. The booming semiconductor fabrication and next-generation manufacturing industries drive the demand for specialty chemicals and high-performance materials.

However, market conditions for chemical base materials in Taiwan are expected to remain challenging in 2026 and beyond. In response, suppliers and producers must adapt to a mature, consolidating market with high cost pressure and intense regional competition. On the other hand, the accelerating modernization and transformation efforts of the Taiwanese petrochemical sector open new business opportunities.

The market offers a "level playing field," with no significant preference for local firms. Key challenges for market entry may include complex administrative procedures, though German companies generally view these as manageable.

To learn more about Taiwan’s chemical industry and the opportunities and challenges for German companies, read the GTAI article by Dr. Jürgen Maurer (in German).

Turning First Aid Training into Skills That Truly Matter

In an emergency, knowing what to do is one thing. Staying calm under pressure and being able to take action is another.

For the second year, the German Trade Office Taipei worked with Forward Alliance for a first aid training session. Building on last year’s basic training with mannequins, this year we took things a step further with real-person scenario exercises. From applying tourniquets and following the five-step trauma assessment to building improvised stretchers and transporting casualties, the hands-on exercises put our judgment and response skills to the test. Dealing with actual body weight, simulated injuries, and the pressure of an emergency scenario made every action more challenging and showed us just how important regular practice can be.

First aid is not something you simply learn once and check off the list. It takes repeated practice to build confidence and turn knowledge into instinct. That’s why GTO organizes first aid and safety training every year, covering everything from AED use and CPR to trauma response, helping our team strengthen our ability to respond when the unexpected happens.

So when a real emergency arises, we can be a little less overwhelmed, a little more composed, and know what to do next.

Because the best emergency response starts with being prepared.

Taiwanese Blood Disorder Treatment Leads to Record Revenue

Taiwan-based PharmaEssentia reported record revenue and profit in both the second quarter and first half of 2026, driven by strong global sales of its blood disorder treatment Ropeg. Second-quarter revenue rose 90.3% year over year to NT$6.86 billion (US$214.4 million), while first-half revenue increased 74.6% to NT$12 billion.

PharmaEssentia's growth outlook remains positive, supported by the recent US approval of its prefilled Ropeg injection pen and potential approvals for essential thrombocythemia (ET) in the US and Japan. If approved by the US Food and Drug Administration, Ropeg would become the first FDA-approved treatment for ET in nearly three decades.

Taiwan Forecasts Highest GDP Growth in Four Decades

After the Taiwan Institute of Economic Research (TIER) raised its 2026 GDP growth forecast to 10.38% in July, the Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics (DGBAS) projected Taiwan's economy to expand by 11.05% in 2026. The agency increased its growth outlook by 1.41 percentage points from its previous estimate, referring to rising global demand for AI technologies and related infrastructure. If realized, Taiwan's economy would record its strongest annual growth since 1987, when GDP grew by 12.75%.

Although inflation is forecast to rise slightly above the central bank's 2% alert threshold at 2.07%, economic growth is expected to remain solid in 2027.

Taiwan Machinery Exports Extend Growth Streak to 18 Months

Taiwan's machinery exports rose 18.4% year over year to US$3.305 billion in July, marking the 18th consecutive month of growth, according to the Taiwan Association of Machinery Industry. The increase was driven mainly by strong demand for AI applications and semiconductors, which boosted exports of electronic equipment by 35.6% to US$709.5 million.

In the first seven months of 2026, machinery exports totaled US$21.1 billion, up 19.1% from a year earlier. The US remained Taiwan's largest export market, accounting for 25.8% of shipments, followed by China at 21.1%. The association said demand for semiconductor- and AI-related equipment continues to support growth, although global trade and regulatory uncertainties could affect future exports.
